BUCS Big Wednesday to return to the University of Nottingham in 2019 10/10/2018

As the 2018/19 BUCS season gets fully underway today, BUCS are thrilled to be returning to the 2018/19 Times University of the Year for Sport, the University of Nottingham.

BUCS Big Wednesday is the flagship event in the BUCS programme and the pinnacle of the team sport season. For 2019, BUCS Big Wednesday will also be celebrating the centenary of university sport and we are excited to return to Nottingham to mark this occasion. BUCS and the University of Nottingham intend to pull out all the stops, promising to make the upcoming Big Wednesday the best yet!

2018 BUCS Big Wednesday Recap

Last year BUCS Big Wednesday consisted of 104 teams from 55 universities participating in 14 sports. To deliver such a large scale event, the University of Nottingham played host with over 100 volunteers and a guest appearance by BUCS patron, HRH Princess Anne.

Why The University of Nottingham?

With the £40 million David Ross Sports Village, the University of Nottingham boasts a wide range of high-quality sports facilities and have a wealth of experience hosting major national and international events. Having successfully hosted BUCS Big Wednesday last year, we are excited to be back at the University of Nottingham in 2019 and look forward to making the event even bigger and better than before. In addition, BUCS will be making some slight alterations to the Big Wednesday structure and sports to further improve the delivery of the day.

In light of the venue announcement, BUCS CEO, Vince Mayne said:

"With the University of Nottingham being awarded Sport University of the Year by the Times, I cannot see a better place to host BUCS Big Wednesday 2019.

The event holds an extra special occasion with 2019 marking 100 years of university sport. To celebrate the centenary we will be pulling out all the stops to ensure that this BUCS Big Wednesday will be the best yet."

Dan Tilley, Director of Sport at the University of Nottingham, expressed his delight in hosting the event during the centenary of university sport:

“As one of the ten founders of the Higher Education sports leagues back in 1919, we are delighted to be chosen as the venue for BUCS Big Wednesday for the centenary year. We are very proud to have recently won the Good University Guide University of the Year for Sport, which is testament to the hard work of the University of Nottingham Sports staff and hosting BUCS Big Wednesday provides us a further platform to promote and celebrate our sporting offer, whilst also helping the sector mark 100 years of university sport.”

University of Nottingham Sports Officer, Emma Hodges took the opportunity to highlight the benefits hosting a BUCS Big Wednesday provides to a university:

“I’m so thrilled that we will be hosting BUCS Big Wednesday again this year, particularly as University Sport celebrates its centenary. BUCS Big Wednesday offers a opportunity for the university to showcase its outstanding facilities but more importantly for our students to experience the pinnacle of university sport.”

BUCS Big Wednesday will take place on Wednesday 27 March.
